What images come to your mind when you hear the word “covenant”?

Traditional wedding vows often include “will you . . . forsaking all others, be faithful . . . as long as you both shall live?” It is a promise of singular and exclusive devotion. It is no surprise that in both the Old Testament and New Testament the covenant of marriage describes God’s relationship to Israel and Christ’s relationship to His church. When a person is saved by grace through faith in Christ, that individual enters into a covenant that calls for singular and exclusive devotion to the Lord.
